Survey on the use of broadband

The report with the main results of the survey on the use of broadband, analysing the use and quality perception of broadband Internet services in Portugal, is already available. This survey was conducted by ANACOM and Metris GFK between 1 November and 21 December 2006.

Among this survey’s main results stands out the fact that, in December 2006, about 34 per cent of Portuguese households had broadband Internet access, a 7.8 and 16.8 per cent increase regarding, respectively, January 2006 and December 2004.

Concerning broadband Internet access technologies, ADSL and cable modem continue to be the main means of access to this service, being used by 60.5 and 36 per cent of the interviewed users, respectively. 3rd generation (3G) mobile accesses also stand out, a technology used by 3.1 per cent of broadband users.

The main barrier to subscribing to the Internet from home is the lack of interest or the fact that it is considered superfluous, the latter being mentioned by about 47 per cent of those interviewed (8.8 per cent more regarding the results of January 2006), followed by the lack of computer, mentioned by 33.3 per cent.

Regarding the barriers to migrating from narrow band to broadband, the main reason stated by those interviewed to justify not migrating is the fact that they do not need or are not interested in making that change (30.4 per cent), while there is an increase in users to whom the price and geographical coverage are important barriers to migrating, reasons mentioned, respectively, by 27.6 and 15.3 of those interviewed.

Globally, most broadband Internet access users consider that the quality of the provided service is satisfactory or very satisfactory. About 91 per cent of users are satisfied or very satisfied with the service’s access speed and reliability, while 95.1 per cent say they are satisfied or very satisfied with the invoicing transparency. On the other hand, the percentage of those interviewed for whom the provided service was worse than expected decreased from 8.8 per cent in January 2006 to 6.6 per cent in December 2006.

Lastly and regarding the broadband Internet access service’s market shares, about 67 per cent of those interviewed are customers of PT Group companies (41.9 per cent of Sapo ADSL and 24 per cent of  Netcabo), Cabovisão coming in second, with a 14 per cent share of users.

As for the methodology used, this survey’s universe was made up of users of both genders, 15 years old or older, living in Mainland Portugal and in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. The sample size was stratified by region and habitat, the selection of interviewees being based on the method of gender and age, education and occupation quota. A total of 8676 telephone interviews were conducted, including 3036 interviews to broadband users.
