European Safer Internet Day

The European Safer Internet Day is celebrated today, 6 February 2007, with several initiatives to promote the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) and to raise the awareness of citizens in general for Internet safety issues.

In Portugal, the coordination of the scheduled events is committed to UMIC - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (Knowledge Society Agency), the following ones standing out: opening of an area dedicated to the SeguraNet project on the website of Ministry of Education's CRIE - Equipa de Missão Computadores, Redes e Internet na Escola (Mission Unit for Computers, Networks and Internet at Schools), to disseminate good practices on Internet safety, made by the schools under the SeguraNet 1 project (2004-2006); visits and information campaigns on this subject in schools that participate in the Safer Internet Day European competition; launch of the national Farol SeguraNet competition, aimed at increasing the number of schools that are certified in terms of safe Internet use; the seminar ''From Internet ghosts to the informed use of Internet''; and the participation of national schools in the worldwide blog ''Blogathon'', in subjects related to Internet safety.

A national application was also submitted to the European Union in the scope of the Safer Internet Plus European programme, by a public-private consortium that intends to promote information on the safe use of Internet, an application which waits for Brussels' approval. This consortium is made up of the following entities: UMIC, DGIDC/ CRIE - Direcção Geral de Inovação e Desenvolvimento Curricular (Directorate-General for Innovation and Curricular Development) / Equipa de Missão Computadores, Redes e Internet na Escola (Mission Unit for Computers, Networks and Internet at Schools), FCCN - Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (Foundation for National Scientific Computation) and Microsoft Portugal.

Highlight also goes to the fact that the 7th European Union Framework Programme foresees 1.2 billion euros for investment in ICT, and that the deadline for applications of projects in this area is 8 May 2007.
