International Comparison of Broadband Prices

A report on an ANACOM survey that compared European broadband prices in Portugal and 12 other European countries has been published. The survey, which was carried out by ANACOM in November 2006 looked at broadband prices in 13 European countries, including Portugal – the former 15 members of the EU excluding Greece and Finland.

One of the report’s highlights is the fact that the download speeds available in Portugal are either the same or faster than those available in the other European countries surveyed. On the other hand it was also found that Portugal was the only country with separate limits for national and international traffic.

In terms of prices, it was found that the lowest prices on offer in Portugal were 3.6% below the average of the countries surveyed. The same was also broadly found when looking at the lowest prices available for each class of download speed, where the prices in Portugal came in lower than average for the most popular download speeds.

However, Portugal’s rankings fall slightly, while remaining better than the average, when instead of the lowest available price, a simple average is taken of the lowest prices practised by the various ISPs for each download speed, while the prices for download speeds of 24 Mps were found to be higher than the average.

Finally with the key finding that the prices on offer for download speeds of 2 Mbps and 8 Mbps in Portugal were the fourth lowest of the European countries surveyed, the report concludes that broadband prices in Portugal are in line with the European average.
