ICANN rejects the creation of top level domain ''.xxx''

The Board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the entity that is responsible for the management of Internet domains, rejected on March 30 last a proposal to create a specific top level domain “.xxx” for Internet pornographic content.

This decision was made at ICANN’s meeting in Lisbon between 26 and 30 March 2007, which also approved the DNSSEC protocol, regarding safety features in the domain names system, a subject considered of the utmost importance due to possible attacks on the Internet. It also adopted agreements with the Ivory Coast, Libya and Russia, aimed at bringing these countries further closer to ICANN.
