ANACOM supports ITU's YES programme

ANACOM is giving its support to the 2007 edition of the Youth Education Scheme (YES), run by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). ANACOM had similarly supported this programme in 2004.

This initiative of the ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau forms part of the Youth Programme. It is aimed at supporting needy and deserving young people from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and developing countries who wish to complete their tertiary education in the information and communication technologies (ICTs) and related fields and whose aim is to make a contribution through their achieved knowledge to the development of their communities, countries and regions.

Within the framework of cooperation with Portuguese speaking countries, it is intended that, if there are candidates from African Countries of Portuguese Official Language (PALOP), ANACOM's financing will preferably be in their favour. In order to encourage candidates, ANACOM has already contacted its counterpart regulators in these countries, advising them of Portugal’s support.

The YES programme has been widely publicized by the ITU as part of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebrations, held today (17 May) with the theme, ''Connecting the Young: the opportunities of ICT''.
