Network of Postal establishments - 2009

ANACOM has released its latest report on the network of postal establishments of CTT - Correios de Portugal, S.A. (CTT), the concessionaire company of the universal postal service, with respect to 2009.

The report reveals that, at the end of the period being reported, there were 2890 postal establishments in operation (17 more than at the end of 2008); of these, 888 were permanent post offices (8 fewer than at the end of 2008), 12 were mobile post offices and 1990 were postal service offices. The data shows a slight increase in the total number of postal establishments, maintaining the upward trend observable since the second half of 2008. This increase reflects the increase in postal service offices, which more than offset the reduction in the number of post offices, whose numbers have been declining since 2002.

The report also shows that there was at least one post office located in each municipality, whereas in 292 municipalities (94.8% of the total) there were two or more postal establishments (a concept which includes not only post offices but also postal service offices). All post offices provided the full range of concession services while 45.4% (904 in absolute terms) of postal service offices did not offer parcel services, although providing the remaining services of the concession.

Compared to the other Member States of the European Union (EU), and based on data provided by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with reference to 2007, Portugal continues to compare positively to respect to the EU average, both in terms of coverage and in terms of postal density.
