On 3 April, Decree-Law no. 290-D/99 of 2 August, that transposes Directive 1999/93/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 1999, on a Community framework for electronic signatures, was published. The new statutory instrument accordingly amends the legal regime of electronic signatures established by Decree-Law no. 290-D/99 of 2 August.
This statutory instrument governs the validity, effectiveness and evidential value of electronic documents, electronic signature and the certification activity of certifying entities resident in Portugal.
It is likely that this legal regime is revised in the medium term, in order to adapt it to the technological evolution bound to take place in the meantime.
