ITU Council meeting in Geneva


Portugal ? represented by Jose Saraiva Mendes, Member of the Board of Directors of ANACOM ? holds the Chairmanship of the 2003 session of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), taking place from the 5th to the 16th of May, in Geneva.

Some of the major subjects to be considered are: the analysis of events to be held up to 2005, such as the World Summit on the Information Society  (WSIS), the 2003 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC03), Telecom exhibitions, the 2004 World Telecommunications Day; as well as the analysis of budgetary questions for 2004-2005 biennium and the operational plans of the ITU Sectors (Radiocommunication Sector, Telecommunication Standardization Sector and Telecommunication Development Sector). The analysis of the report of a group of specialists to review ITU?s management and the approval of the biennial budget, considering the financial difficulties that presently affect the Union, are also within the main subjects to be discussed in this meeting.

ITU Council is responsible for the Management of ITU in between two sessions of the Plenipotentiary Conference (PP) which is the supreme organ of ITU and takes place every for years. The Council is composed of 46 Member States elected by PP. Portugal is a Member of the ITU Council since 1994.
