European Commission publishes report on competition in 2004

The European Commission published a report on the competition policy in the European Union (EU) in 2004.

In a year marked by the enlargement to ten more member States, the modernization of competition rules, the entrance of a new Commission and the consequent reorganization of the Directorate-General for Competition (DG Competition), this report identifies the main developments which occurred in 2004 and points the objectives for 2005: to give priority to actions of prevention and correction of anticompetitive practices in the European economy; to promote the consolidation of the regulatory framework in the most diverse industries, specially the energy; and to remove obstacles to competition in recently liberalized sectors and others, such as those of electronic communications, postal services and transports.

The respect and promotion of competition within the EU will thus continue to be important elements in the development of a knowledge-based society, the deepening of the internal market and the increase of a favorable business environment.

This report refers, for each industry, the processes of market analysis, significant market power (SMP) evaluation, imposition of obligations and notification to the Commission that the national regulatory authorities (NRA) have made, as well as the processes that involved the DG Competition regarding digital terrestrial television (Germany) and broadband (France and United Kingdom).
