Meeting of the World Conference on International Telecommunications working group - Geneva

The first meeting of the ITU Council working group in charge of preparing for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), set up in wake of the 2009 Council session, was held last 25 January in Geneva. The WCIT should take place in 2012 with a view to resolving differences over the obsolete International Telecommunications Regulation, as consensus has yet to be reached among ITU member States as to whether it should be eliminated or updated.

In this first meeting, the group mainly focused on organisational issues such as the structure of this group’s report to WCIT-12. The talks centred on deciding whether it was appropriate to schedule the next working group meetings, bearing in mind that no dates have been set for the WCIT. The group agreed on a number of possible dates; the final decision will be made at the 2010 ITU Council session.

The group also agreed that WCIT-12 should be held between 5 and 30 November 2012 and last from five to ten days, depending on the preparatory activity’s effectiveness.

WG WCIT will next meet on 12 April 2010 in Geneva.
