European 112 Day - 11 February

Today, 11 February 2010, marks European 112 Day. The single emergency number 112 is common to all 27 Member States of the European Union and is used to contact emergency services free of charge.

According to the 112 foundation, based in Brussels and set up to promote the knowledge and appropriate use of the European emergency number 112, over 9 out of 10 Europeans are positive towards the creation and existence of this life saving number, still 3 out of 4 are unaware of these 3 digits that could save their lives when in need of reaching the police, ambulance or fire services.

In Portugal, the Ministry of Interior is marking the European Day of the emergency number today with a session on the 112 number at the headquarters of the Foreign Nationals and Borders Service (SEF) involving a hundred primary schoolchildren. The event will see participation by the Secretary of State for the Interior and the President of the Municipal Council of Oeiras.
