The type of transmission typically employed by private networks is voice transmission. However, depending on the needs of the title holder, other types of transmission may be authorised whenever deemed necessary, including data transmission.

Use of selective call devices is permitted; however, Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch Systems must still be deployed when the network uses shared channels and wherever deemed necessary for the management of the radio spectrum. The obligation to employ such systems on a network will always be specified in the licence.

Time-out devices and signal blocking devices for when the channel is engaged are mandatory for all land mobile service networks that operate on shared channels.
