The 2021 ANACOM-URSI Portugal Research Prize was awarded for the work "Potentials and Limitations of Customized Bio-radar Applications".
This prize, sponsored by ANACOM, was presented at the closing session of the 15th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSIhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1696001 by Sandro Mendonça, member of ANACOM's Board of Directors, and by the President of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, Luísa Mendes.
The winning work is focused on the development of the Bio-Radar prototype, a system capable of remotely monitoring vital signs, such as respiratory and cardiac signals. In this work, solutions were explored with a view to real application scenarios, in order to identify the system's limits and potential. As an example, the work looked at the possibility of integrating the Bio-Radar into a car seat, with the aim of monitoring the driver's respiratory signs. This integration was achieved using especially developed textile antennas. Meanwhile, improvements were made to the performance of algorithms for extracting vital signs, taking into account long monitoring periods where it is not possible to guarantee the subject's stability. Finally, the potential use of vital signs captured by this system was explored to identify the emotions felt by the subjects.
We congratulate the entire team responsible for the prize-winning work, Carolina Gouveia and José Vieira from the University of Aveiro and IT Aveiro - Instituto de Telecomunicações de Aveiro (Aveiro Telecommunications Institute), Pedro Pinho from IT Aveiro and ISEL - Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (Lisbon Institute of Engineering), and Daniel Albuquerque from CISeD - Centro de Investigação em Serviços Digitais (Digital Services Research Centre) of ESTGV - Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Viseu (Viseu School of Technology and Management).
The presentation made by João Miguel Coelho, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of ANACOM, at the opening session of the Congress is also available. The presentation highlighted the contribution of various agents in the communications sector to environmental sustainability.
