The CERP working group dedicated to European coordination for Universal Postal Union issues (WG UPU) held a Spanish-chaired videoconference last 23 and 29 June and 7 July.
The 29 July meeting was scheduled following a meeting of the UPU task force (TF) on opening the Union to the broader postal sector, the only issue on the agenda. The other two meetings basically focused on preparing European participation in the 27th UPU Congress and not just the question of opening the UPU but also the Union’s financial health. The European countries expressed their views regarding revision of the UPU contributory system, mechanisms to implement to recover long-term debts and sustainability of the Union’s pension fund.
CERP WG UPU may meet again during the summer period, given that an extraordinary virtual session of the UPU Council of Administration may be scheduled for August to determine the format, date, place and extent of scope of the 27th UPU Congress (for the time being postponed sine die).
