Meeting of the Committee for ITU Policy (Com-ITU) - Copenhagen

The CEPT Committee for International Telecommunication Union Policy (Com-ITU) met in Copenhagen last 6-9 September. This committee chaired by Portugal is responsible for European coordination of participation in ITU activities.

The gathering was largely devoted to preparing Europe’s presentation in the upcoming ITU World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA), to be held in the last quarter of 2016 in Tunisia. A total of ten new European common proposals (ECPs) for WTSA-2016 were adopted, namely covering organisational matters of the Telecommunications Standardisation Sector (ITU-T) and issues associated to the internet and numbering.

The project team (PT) for preparation of the 2017 World Telecommunications Development Conference (PT WTDC-17), chaired by Paulius Vaina of Lithuania, met for the first time and discussed several principles that will guide European participation in that conference.

Finally, Com-ITU discussed a document drafted by its chair to organise, position and enhance Europe’s negotiating power at the 2018 Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-18).

The next Com-ITU meeting will be held in Copenhagen on 18-20 January 2017.
