ANACOM Alerts - new rules on contract lock-in periods and how to avoid surprises in your phone bill

As part of the "Alerts ANACOM" initiative, launched to strengthen the information that ANACOM makes available to consumers on specific sector issues, reflecting the main issues raised in complaints, the following article was published on 23 July (Correio da Manhã) and 24 July (Jornal de Notícias):

New rules on contract lock-in periods

  • From now on, your provider is required to inform you in writing about any contract lock-in period.
  • When contracts are made over the telephone, the provider must retain a recording of your call for the entire term of the contract, until the last bill.
  • The amount payable by the customer in case of early cancellation is now limited by law.
  • A new lock-in period can only be applied with your express permission and with the offer of new promotional conditions or subsidised equipment.

The section this week on Radio Renascença will air on 26, 27 and 28 July between 5 pm and 6 pm in the 1st position of the block as follows:

Do you want to avoid surprises in your phone bill?

  • There are certain tariffs that include free calls to fixed numbers (numbers starting with 2 and, for some operators, also numbers starting with 3).
  • But be careful: numbers starting with 7 (e.g.: 760) have increased costs and are not included in these tariffs.
  • Numbers starting with 601, 607, 608, 646 and 648 also have increased costs but should be barred by default.
  • If you do not agree with the total amount of your bill, you can only pay the amount you consider correct.
