Slovakia takes over the EU presidency for the second half of 2016


Slovakia has taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) from 1 July 31 to December 2016, as part of the presidential triumvirate composed of the Netherlands (1st half 2016) and Malta (1st half 2017).

The main priorities announced for the next 6 months are:

  • economically strong Europe;
  • modern single market;
  • sustainable migration and asylum policies;
  • globally engaged Europe.

These priorities correspond to 3 principles:

  • achieve tangible results;
  • combat fragmentation;
  • guidance for citizens.
