The Broadband Commission for Digital Development, a joint initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has published the report ‘The Broadband Bridge: Linking ICT with Climate Action’.
Released on 2 April, this report results from the work conducted by the Broadband Commission Working Group on Climate Change. It aims to raise awareness of the pivotal role that information and communication technology (ICT), and particularly broadband networks, can play in helping create a low carbon economy of the future, and highlights the importance of public private partnerships in accelerating change.
Through practical examples, it is demonstrated how broadband can contribute to reducing greenhouse gasses, mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change, and promoting resource efficiency, while at the same time building more prosperous and inclusive societies.
The report presents policymakers with ten recommendations to hasten and strengthen the power of ICT and broadband to accelerate global progress towards a low-carbon economy and to accomplish the Broadband Commission's 2015 goals.
