The European Commission has recently published a report profiling access to and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in European schools. The report, entitled ''Benchmarking Access and Use of ICT in European Schools 2006'', presents the main findings of a study that was carried out in the 25 Member States of the EU, as well as in Norway and Iceland.
According to the study's findings, around 96% of educational establishments in the EU currently have access to the internet, with 67% having broadband access. Although these results are positive, the study reveals a wide gap between countries when it comes to high-speed internet access; while the Scandinavian countries, Holland, Estonia and Malta have broadband access in 90% of schools, the figures for other countries such as Greece, Poland, Cyprus and Lithuania come in at under 35%.
As far as Portugal is concerned, around 97% of educational establishments have internet access and 73% have broadband, according to the study's findings. This puts Portugal in 16th place in the ranking of the 26 countries covered by the study.
