Portugal elected to ITU Council


Portugal has been elected as one of the 46 States to sit on the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); the Council is the body responsible for ensuring that, in the interval between Plenipotentiary Conferences, the Union's activities, policies and strategies are consistent with those defined by the Conferences. Receiving 121 votes, Portugal has been elected as part of Region B – Western Europe, alongside France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Turkey.

The elections were held as part of the ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-06) which is currently taking place in Antalya, Turkey (6 - 24 November 2006).

Elections have also been concluded for the following posts:

  • Deputy Secretary-General - M. Touré (Mali);
  • Secretary-General - H. Zhao (China);
  • Director of Telecommunications Development Bureau (TDB) - Sami Bin Al-Basheer (Saudi Arabia);
  • Director of Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) - Malcolm Johnson (United Kingdom); and
  • Director of Radiocommunication Bureau (RB ) - V. Timofeev (Russia).

It is of note that a European has been elected to one of the above posts for the first time in 8 years as in the last two Plenipotentiary Conferences (PP-98 and PP-02) no Europeans were elected.

Finally elections were held for the members of the Radio Regulations Board (RRB).
