ANACOM authorizes tests for WiMAX

Following a request submitted by PT Comunicações (PTC), ANACOM has granted this undertaking the authorization to perform technical tests in order to assess, in the scope of the FWA (fixed wireless access), BWA (broadband wireless access) systems using WiMAX technology, in the frequencies allocated thereto for the FWA.

No obligation or constraint for a future authorization of this type of systems in Portugal arises herefrom, nor is ANACOM under any bound, nor can PTC claim any right, expectation or legally protected interests, as regards both the allocation of rights of use which result from the process of FWA consultation, yet to be concluded, and any future process concerning the use of WiMAX.

In the meantime, ANACOM is closely following the debate on the implementation of the WiMAX technology, taking place at present in several international fora, which currently focuses on technical aspects (such as technical solutions, spectrum, standards) and on the regulatory framework for this type of technology, aiming at the harmonization of solutions to be adopted. The framework of this technology in Portugal shall thus take into account the harmonized solutions which may come forth from that debate, especially within Europe.
