Mobile network subscriptions at 8.53 million - 4th quarter 2002

The number of land mobile service subscriptions reached 8.53 million at the end of 2002, 7% more than at the end of the previous year, data from the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) indicates.

Of the customer population, most - 78% or 6.7 million - use pre-paid cards. The penetration rate rose to 82.5 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.

By the end of December 2002, one year after the introduction of mobile portability in Portugal, more than 6,000 mobile numbers had been ported, i.e., transferred between mobile operators.
 
Some 5.6 billion telephone calls originated in the mobile networks in 2002, altogether generating nearly 10 billion minutes of traffic.

In the fourth quarter alone nearly 1.45 billion calls originated in the mobile networks, while 500 million calls were received.

The sending of written messages was the service with the highest growth rate, with 2 billion messages sent over the course of 2002, 28% more than in the previous year.
