Statistic evolution of cable television service - third quarter 2002

The number of cable television service subscribers amounted to 1.23 million at the end of the third quarter 2002, according to data of Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). This figure translates a growth of 17% as compared to the same quarter of last year, being equivalent to the adhesion of 180 thousand new subscribers.

The Lisbon and Tagus Valley region accounts for the highest number of subscribers: 55% of the national total. Alentejo and Algarve region is the one where the growth in the number of new subscribers was more significant: 46% between the third quarters of 2001 and 2002. 

At the end of the third quarter 2002, 3.25 million households were cabled, 10% more than in the same period of last year. Alentejo and Algarve region accounted for the highest increment, with a 32% increase in cabled households between the third quarters of this year and last year. Cabled means the household that is prepared to have access to a cable television service.

As in previous quarters, Lisbon and Tagus Valley account for the highest number of cabled households with respect to the total amount, followed by the Northern region.

Moreover, in Lisbon and Tagus Valley, the cable rate increase exceeds 100% since there is more than one cable television operator involved in cabling households.

The percentage of cabled households that effectively receive the service amounts to 38%. Taking into account the total universe of households, cabled and non-cabled, 25% of households are subscribers of a cable television service. In the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira, this percentage amounts to 46%.

In September 2002, the total amount of DTH - Direct To Home (satellite) technology subscribers, the alternative to the cable infrastructure for distribution of television signal, amounted to 270 thousand, which corresponds to an increase of 38% as compared to the values that were obtained in September 2001.

As to the distribution of DTH subscribers, such as in the previous quarter, the Northern region accounts for the highest amount of subscribers with respect to the Country total, 32%.
