Liberalised postal traffic falls 0.5% in 2nd quarter

During the second quarter of 2008, traffic from postal services operated in competition totalled about 69.8 million items, corresponding to 23% of total postal traffic. This total is down on the previous quarter by 0.5% but up by 3.9% on the second quarter of 2007.

During the quarter being reported, the volume of national postal traffic totalled around 64.5 million objects, while outgoing international traffic registered 5.2 million objects. National traffic made up 92.5% of total postal traffic operated in competition, with outgoing international traffic representing 7.5%.

This decline seen was principally driven by falls in international traffic seen during the quarter, which went down by around 7.8% over the previous quarter. This, in turn, can be explained, above all, by trends seen for the editorial mail of an alternative operator and addressed correspondence of CTT. Compared to the same period of the previous year, outgoing international traffic fell by 6.8%, due also to the reasons given above.

National traffic grew by 4.9% in annual terms, driven by an increase in the national addressed correspondence of Grupo CTT.

In the liberalised area, Grupo CTT was responsible for around 93% of national traffic and for around 84% of outgoing international traffic.

In this period, 4.7 million of the total 69.8 million liberalised postal objects fell within the express mail category, with around 65 million being encompassed by the remaining service categories. Express mail therefore accounted for around 7% of total traffic operated in competition, with the remaining categories making up 93%.

In this quarter, the traffic of services covered by the express mail category grew by 2.9% over the previous quarter and by 4.2% over the same period of the previous year, due in particular to the growth in national postal parcels.

Non-express services fell by 0.7% over the previous quarter, as a result of a fall in addressed publicity of the universal service provider. In comparison to 2Q07, the trend is upwards due to the significant growth seen in the addressed correspondence of the same provider and the editorial mail of an alternative provider.

Regarding the offer structure, it can be seen that in the second quarter of 2008 the companies of Grupo CTT held a 47.2% share of express mail traffic and a 95.6% share of non-express mail traffic.
