Portuguese leads International Telecommunications Satellite Organization bringing together 149 countries


José Manuel Toscano was elected as Director General of ITSO - International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, which brings together 149 countries, winning by a significant margin over the other candidate for leadership of the organization, Flavien Bachabi. The election was held during the 32nd Assembly of Parties, which was held in Estoril until Friday.

The new leader takes over from Ahmed Touma, who led the organization over the past seven years.

José Manuel Toscano, who was Director of External Relations of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO), has played an active part in the telecommunications sector for over 25 years, both nationally and internationally, with positions at ANACOM - Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações, the European Commission, in companies, university and in various regional and international regulatory bodies within the European Union, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), among others.

ITSO - International Telecommunications Satellite Organization was founded in 1971, with Portugal as one of the founding members. Its main mission is to supervise INTELSAT, an organisation that has developed a global system of satellite telecommunications and is bound to comply with a set of public service obligations, especially the maintenance of contractual commitments with respect to countries or regions that depend on the INTELSAT system to communicate with the outside world, and the maintenance of global coverage and connectivity on a commercial basis.
