International Communication Union - Portugal re-elected to the ITU Council


Portugal was re-elected to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council in the elections held yesterday in the Plenipotentiary Conference of the same organization, which met at Marrakech.  This will be the third consecutive mandate of Portugal in this so important ITU governing body.

ITU is an intergovernmental organization integrated in the United Nations dealing with fundamental decisions for the harmonization of the telecommunications market worldwide. ITU is divided into three Sectors: Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization and Telecommunication Development.

ITU Council is composed of 46 countries, distributed into 5 regions: Americas, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia / Australasia (12 seats). With 124 votes, Portugal was the second country that received more votes from Western Europe, after Germany. In the same group, Switzerland, Spain, France, Norway, Turkey and Italy were also elected.
