Mobile Service evolution - 2nd quarter 2002

The number of customers of the land mobile service operators reached 8.1 million by the end of the second quarter 2002, according to data compiled by Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). This value translates a growth rate of 0.6%, as compared to the previous quarter, which is equivalent to 49 thousand new subscribers. 

Out of this total amount of customers, 78.3% corresponds to prepaid access cards to the service. By the end of the second quarter of the year, 1 411 mobile telephone numbers had been ported.

The penetration rate of the service in the market amounted to 78.4 subscribers per one hundred inhabitants in June, above the average of the European Union, which did not exceed 75.6 subscribers per one hundred inhabitants.

During the second quarter, the mobile networks generated 1.3 thousand million calls, which totalise as a whole 2.3 thousand million conversation minutes.  Most of the traffic originated by mobile networks - 66% of the total - goes to the same origin mobile network.

The average duration of calls originated in the mobile network during this quarter was of 102 seconds, the calls made to international networks being the ones that lasted more, with an average of 232 seconds per call.

During the second quarter of the year, 378.6 million written messages (SMS) were originated in mobile networks.

During the period under analysis, about 504 million calls were made to mobile networks, which totalised more than 876 million conversation minutes.  Traffic originated in other mobile networks is the most significant one, representing 55% of the total amount of calls and 49% of the total amount of conversation minutes.

The average duration of calls ended in the mobile network during this quarter amounted to 104 seconds, the calls originated in international networks being the ones that lasted more, with an average of 195 seconds per call.

The "roaming in" traffic - corresponding to the use of Portuguese networks by customers of foreign mobile operators - represented about 21.5 million calls and 37.5 million minutes, which contributes to an average duration of calls of approximately 104 seconds.

In the case of "roaming out" - connections made by customers of Portuguese networks abroad - the number of calls totalised about 18.9 million and the registered minutes amounted to 32 million, which gives and average duration of calls of about 101 seconds.
