By the end of the first quarter, 2002, the number of customers for mobile services in Portugal had risen to over eight million. According to date compiled by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM), there were 8,071,000 customers of such services in March, of which 78.5% were subscribers to pre-paid services.
In the space of one year - between the first quarter, 2001 and first quarter, 2002, the total number of customers of the three operators rose by 16%, corresponding to 1.1 million new subscribers.
These figures mean that Portugal has attained a penetration rate for the mobile services market of 77.9 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, continuing above the European average of 75.6.
Between January and March of this year, 2.2 billion conversation minutes and 1.3 billion calls were originated in national mobile networks, destined for other national or foreign mobile and fixed networks.
During the same period, 843.6 million conversation minutes and 485.8 million calls were received. The average duration of each call received was 104 seconds. Of the total number of calls received, 55% were derived from other mobile networks.
In relation to the roaming service, it was found that during the first quarter of the year, customers of Portuguese networks, generated 29.2 million minutes and 17.5 million calls while abroad. Each connection lasted an average of 100 seconds.
In turn, customers of foreign networks generated 29.2 million conversation minutes and 16.5 million calls via roaming services in Portuguese networks. Each call made in roaming services in Portugal lasted an average of 106 seconds.
