T-DAB - Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting - local radio stations may broadcast using digital technology

In the future, Portuguese local radio stations will have the possibility to broadcast using Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting (T-DAB) technology. The Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM), guaranteed this possibility this month by planning the necessary frequency blocks.

T-DAB - Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting is a new digital radio system developed in order to substitute the current analogue system. T-DAB has the capacity to broadcast radio programmes with a CD-level quality and provide others types of services such as data transmission.

Radio spectrum reservation often requires international planning. In this case, ANACOM, in representation of Portugal, guaranteed the necessary planning of frequency blocks for T-DAB in the L band throughout Portuguese territory, in a meeting of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) held in Maastricht, Holland between June 10-18.

The process of introduction of Digital Radio in Portugal was initiated through the assignment of a license to RDP - Radiodifusão Portuguesa for the establishment of a national infrastructure of digitalisation, codification, multiplexing, transport and emission of the broadcasting service, using the T-DAB norm.
