Subscription television signals distribution services by cable and satellite grow in second quarter

At the end of June, in Portugal there were 1,897 million subscribers to the distribution of subscription television signals service supported by cable distribution networks or satellite (DTH), a year-on-year increase of 6.5% and a quarterly increase of 0.9%.

In the same period subscribers to these services represented around 34.4% of households, an increase of 2.1 points in the penetration rate.

76.5% of subscribers to services of distribution of subscription television signals supported by cable or satellite were customers of the cable distribution service, which had a total of around 1.5 million subscribers at the end of June, 3.8% more than for the same period of 2006, translating to 53 thousand new subscribers.

The percentage of Subscribers to this service compared to the Portuguese population stood 13.7%, 0.2% up on the previous quarter.

Between April and June the highest growth in cable television subscriber numbers was seen in the Alentejo, both in comparison with the previous quarter (7.1%) and in comparison with the same quarter of the previous year.

In the second quarter the distribution of cable television subscribers by region remained little changed, with 49.2% all cable television subscribers concentrated in the Lisbon area.

During the same period there were around 52 thousand new cabled households, for all cable TV distribution operators. The total number of cabled households, for all operators, has therefore reached 4.1 million, 1.3% more than the figure for the previous quarter.

During the quarter, the Alentejo was the region that saw the highest growth in the number of cabled households (7%).

No major changes were seen in the distribution of cabled households by region; the Lisbon area with 44% continues to have the biggest concentration of available cable accesses.

At the end of June cable television distribution service subscribers represented around 26.3% of all Portuguese households, 0.3% more than in the same quarter of 2006.

The television distribution service using Direct To Home (DTH) technology had 445 thousand subscribers, 0.2% more than in the previous quarter and 16.3% more than in the same quarter of 2006. In absolute terms, this translates to one thousand more subscribers during the quarter.

The North and Centre Regions continue to have the highest number of subscribers (both with over 30%).
