Liberalized postal services volume down slightly in 2nd quarter

/ Updated on 30.01.2007

The number of items sent via postal services operating in competition reached 76 million in the second quarter, representing 25.4% of all postal volume. This gives a fall of 1.8% compared to the previous quarter, but a rise of 23.5% when compared to the same quarter of 2005. The steep year-on-year rise may have been driven by the reduction in the reserved area of the market, as a new phase of liberalisation was launched on 01 January.

During the second quarter of 2006, 71 million postal objects were sent nationally, a quarterly fall of 1.7%, while the volume of outgoing international items stood at around 5 million objects, 3.3% down on the previous quarter.

In the liberalized areas of the market, CTT Group was responsible for 95% of national postal traffic and 92% of outgoing international traffic, holding onto similar levels as in the previous quarter

During the quarter, and of the around 76 million items that were sent through postal services operating in competition, more than 4 million fell into the express mail category and 71 million into other categories. Accordingly express mail, accounted for 6% of postal traffic covered by competition, while other categories accounted for the other 94%.

The number of items sent through express mail rose by 8.9% over the quarter, while volume in non-express mail services fell by 2.4%

The companies making up CTT Group, held a 47.4% share of express mail traffic in June, 3.4% up on the previous quarter, while in non-express mail their share stood at 98.1%. The increase in CTT's share of the express mail market can be put down to an increase in national deliveries

As of the end of the quarter, there were 17,555 people working in the liberalised areas of the postal sector, 310 more than the year before. This rise was driven by CTT's competitors who increased their workforce by 32.6% over the year.
