Cable TV with 1.4 million subscribers

As of the end of the second quarter of this year, there were 1.4 million subscribers to Cable TV, representing around 28% of all Portuguese households. Although the figure is unchanged over the quarter, year-on-year the number of subscribers has increased by 3.2% representing 44 thousand new subscribers.

Around 36% of cabled households (3.914 million households) had subscriptions to cable TV, while as a proportion of the total population the number of subscribers remained steady when compared to the previous quarter, at 13.4%.

The number of cabled households stood at 3.914 million, up 2.6% on the previous quarter, giving an increase of 100 thousand cabled households between April and June.

The number of cabled households in the Autonomous Regions and in the region of Lisbon remained practically unchanged, while the biggest increase was seen in the North region where there was an increase of 6.8%).

Nor was there any significant change in the regional distribution of cabled households. Lisbon keeps its position as having the highest concentration of cabled households (46%), followed by the North with 29%, and the Centre with 14%. 5% of all cabled households can be found in the Algarve, 3% in the Alentejo, 2% in the Autonomous region of Madeira and 1% in the Azores.

Lisbon also has half of all subscribers, with 712 thousand of 1.407 million subscribers nationally.

In the same quarter, television distribution services using Direct To Home (DTH) technology had 383 thousand subscribers, 8 thousand less than in the previous quarter, giving a decline of 2% over the quarter and 1% over the year.

Compared to the previous quarter the Azores saw the highest rise in the number of subscribers, with an increase of 11.1% to 29 thousand, while with 119 thousand clients each, the Centre and North Regions continue to have the highest concentrations of users of this service.
