7.6 million customers for the Land Mobile Service

Data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) reveals that the three Land Mobile Service operators had 7.6 million customers at the end of the third quarter, 2001. This corresponds to growth of 32% between the 3rd quarter, 2000 and the 3rd quarter 2001, equivalent to the adherence of 1.8 million new users to the service.

As a result of this evolution, the service's penetration rate in Portugal remains above the European Union average. In September, around 74 of every 100 Portuguese citizens subscribed to the mobile service. The European Union average is 71.7%.

Traffic also increased, given that the service's users made and received more calls during the 3rd quarter, 2001 than during the 2nd quarter, 2001.

During the third quarter, 2001 1,470 million outgoing calls (mobile-to-fixed and mobile-to-mobile connections) were made from the three mobile networks. This corresponds to a total of 2,270 million conversation minutes and an average of 2 calls per day for each user.

During the same period, 337 million incoming calls were made to the mobile network (fixed-to-mobile and mobile-to-mobile connections), corresponding to 608 million minutes.
