At the end of September there were 11.1 million mobile telephone service customers in Portugal, for an increase of 3.9% over the previous quarter and 10% over the same period in the previous year.

Pre-paid cards represented 81.4% of total subscribers and accounted for most of the service’s growth, as they rose by 4.3% during the review quarter. This growth is related to the appearance of the UZO, Vodafone Directo and Rede 4 offers.

Some 18.6% of all users were holders of subscription plans.

With the higher number of users the service’s penetration rate rose to 105.8%, remaining above the EU average, which was 93.3% in the same period.

According to an ANACOM survey of mobile service consumption conducted last June, 73.5% of residents in Portugal were land mobile service customers.

Mobile service customers made about 1.69 billion calls in the third quarter, 4.8% more than in the previous quarter and 10.7% more than in the same quarter of the previous year. During the same period the mobile telephone users received 1.7 billion calls, 3.5% more than in the previous quarter and 10% more than in the year-on-year period.

Fixed-mobile calls recorded a negative variation with a 2.3% decline over the previous quarter. The number of conversation minutes in the mobile networks increased by 5.4% over the previous quarter, surpassing 3 billion minutes.

The third quarter recorded a significant rise in the number of written messages sent - 1.54 billion SMS - for a 116.7% increase over the previous quarter. This amount of growth, which is 140% in year-on-year terms, is due to the mobile operators’ promotion campaigns to boost the use of this service.

The average number of SMS sent per customer rose from 22 to 46.
