Cable TV with 1,468,000 customers at the end of June

There were 1,468,000 cable television distribution service customers in Portugal at the end of June, 2.1% more than in March, meaning that subscribers represent 14% of the Portuguese population. This subscribers figure indicates that 39.8% of all cabled homes (3.69 million houses or 73.6% of total housing) subscribe to the service, 0.5% more than in March.

When the number of subscribers is considered vis-à-vis the number of households in Portugal, the service's penetration rate stood at 29.3% at the end of June.

In absolute terms, between April and June some 30,000 new customers joined the service between April and June. In year-on-year terms 97,000 new subscribers were counted.

During the second quarter of the year, the distribution of cable television subscribers in the country's various regions remained unchanged. The Lisbon region concentrates 50.8% of total subscribers, followed by the North with 24% of the total and the Centre with 11.9% of total subscribers. The Madeira Autonomous Region has 4.4% of total cable television subscribers, followed by the Algarve with 3.7%, the Azores with 2.7% and the Alentejo, the region with the fewest service subscribers, with 2.6% of the total, or 39,000 subscribers.

In the quarter under review, the Madeira and Alentejo regions continued to be the regions with respectively the most (67.8%) and least (9.2%) adhesion to cable television distribution service.

At the end of the second quarter of this year, the service of cable television distribution by DTH (direct to home) technology counted 404,000 subscribers, 2.9% more than in the previous quarter and 13% more than in the same period of the previous year. Between April and June 11,000 subscribers joined this service. In year-on-year terms the increase was of 47,000 subscribers. Madeira recorded the sharpest growth, 35.3%. Year-on-year growth stood at 168%.

The North and Centre regions continue to concentrate the highest number of subscribers, 32% and 33%, respectively.
