Data indicates 6% increase in cable television subscribers by end of September

There were 1,391,000 cable television service subscribers in Portugal at the end of September, according to data from ANACOM - Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações. This figure represents an increase of 6% over the same quarter in the previous year, corresponding to 79,000 new adhesions, making for a service penetration rate of about 13% of the population.

Growth in the third quarter, from July through September, was 1.4%, with the adhesion of 19,000 new customers.

Just over half, or 50.7%, of total cable television service customers are in the Lisbon region, which along with the North region registered the highest quarterly growth, 1.6%. The North region otherwise ranks second in the country in terms of the number of subscribers to cable television distribution services, with 333,000 users. This region accounts for the highest year-on-year growth in the number of users of such services, 8.1%, followed by the Alentejo, with year-on-year growth of 6.1% to 37,000 subscribers, and Lisbon with 5.8% growth to 706,000 subscribers.

Some 3.6 million homes had been cabled by the end of the third quarter of 2004, corresponding to 72% of Portuguese households. And 39% of this field subscribed to the service.

The number of cabled homes at the end of September represents an increase of 3.8% in year-on-year terms, corresponding to 133,000 households. In the third quarter the increase was 0.7%, or 24,000 homes.
