NET.mede records 121 thousand Internet speed tests in the 2nd quarter 2024

In the 2nd quarter of 2024, NET.mede https://netmede.pt/ carried out around 121 thousand Internet access speed tests (an average of 1,332 tests per day), which is 11% less than last quarter and 31% less than the same quarter last year.

Approximately 65% of the tests were carried out via residential fixed accesses and 23% via mobile accesses. The decrease in the number of tests compared to the previous quarter (-11%) was observed in all access categories, with the exception of tests via undefined accesses and international accesses, although tests via these types of access represent only 2% and 0.1% respectively of the total number of tests performed.

For residential fixed access, the hours with the highest number of tests continued to be between 4pm and 10pm. For mobile accesses, the hours with the highest number of tests were between 10am and 11am and between 3pm and 7pm, in contrast to the previous quarter when the morning period (10am-12pm) was less relevant.

In the 2nd quarter of 2024, ten municipalities did not register tests for residential fixed access, out of a total of 308 municipalities across the country, the highest number of municipalities not registering tests since the 1st quarter of 2019. For mobile access, 22 municipalities did not register any tests.

NUTS II Northern Portugal was the region with the highest number of residential fixed and mobile access tests, although the municipality with the highest number of tests was Lisbon, regardless of the type of access.

Half of (median) speed tests carried out on NET.mede https://netmede.pt/ during the 1st quarter of 2024 found:

DOWNLOAD: 96 Mbps or more for fixed residential accesses and 18 Mbps or more for mobile accesses
UPLOAD: 98 Mbps or more for residential fixed accesses and 10 Mbps or more for mobile accesses
LATENCY: 12 milliseconds (ms) or less for residential fixed accesses and 35 ms or less for mobile accesses

The median results for mobile accesses would be better if we took into account only the tests carried out on the app, specifically on the 5G mobile network (138 Mbps download speed, 25 Mbps upload speed and 25 ms latency).

Compared to the same quarter last year, for residential fixed accesses there was an improvement in download speed (+8%) and latency (-8%), but a decrease in upload speed (-1%). For mobile accesses, there was an improvement in upload speed (+29%) and latency (-5%) compared to the same quarter last year, but a decrease in download speed (-4%).

In the case of fixed accesses, the trend may reflect, among other things, users subscribing to higher speed offers.
