ANACOM launches campaign about the installation of 5G stations as requested by specific entities

ANACOM launched today, 26 September 2022, an information campaign directed at the entities that, under the terms of the 5G Auction Regulation (Regulation no. 987-A/2020, of 5 Novemberhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1573881), can request the installation of macro base stations and outdoor small cells that allow them to realize all the potential of 5G. The campaign aims to provide information about the benefits and deadlines for requesting the installation.

The auction regulation stipulates that the operators that acquire at least 50 MHz in the 3.6 GHz band, i.e. MEO –- Serviços de Comunicações e Multimédia, NOS Comunicações and Vodafone Portugal – Comunicações Pessoais, must install macro base stations or outdoor small cells whenever requested to do so by the following entities:

  • hospitals and health centres;
  • universities, other higher education establishments and other entities within the national scientific and technological system;
  • ports and airports;
  • military institutions;
  • management entities or developers of business parks, industrial parks or business zones.

This ANACOM campaign aims to inform and alert the respective entities about the importance of addressing their requests to the operators, within the stipulated deadlines. These infrastructures guarantee, namely, greater 5G connectivity and an optimised network for the needs of the organisation, by achieving better coverage and making sure full advantage is taken of the advances in the latest mobile generation, now and in the future. They also allow shortfalls in the mobile network to be addressed or its reinforcement, as well as the advantages that the 5G network itself brings: sending a higher volume of data at a faster rate, massive machine-to-machine communication and ultra-reliable communications, with very low latency.

Within the scope of this campaign, ANACOM directly contacted the entities involved and also published a  Download file leaflet, a videohttps://youtu.be/lejqPmd94Vs?rel=0&autoplay=1 and a podcast https://open.spotify.com/episode/6LB8KFAQLi2KtWKYhOHhWY on the topic. ANACOM services (800 206 665) can also be called to clarify any doubts on the subject.
