The Portuguese Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) held its fourteenth congress on 10 December 2020, by videoconference, dedicated to the theme of “Telecommunications in the pandemic crisis: paths towards virtualisation”.
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the organisation of societies already under pressure due to the urgent need to adapt to climate change and make the indispensable energy transition, revealing the vital importance of telecommunications in ensuring the connectivity of citizens in areas that are fundamental to the social structure such as health, education, services, industry and entertainment.
What will the future bring?
The pandemic has decisively contributed to accelerate the digitalisation and transformation of society, where telecommunications and technology will play a crucial role in the redefinition of the business sector, in territorial reorganisation and in practically all sectors of the post-pandemic society. The telecommunications industry and research will certainly be called upon to find solutions for the challenges that will be posed by a civilization under profound and rapid transformation.
