COVID-19 - Internet use while sheltering in place increases tests on NET.mede

The current situation of sheltering in place resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, teleworking and distance learning have led to a significant increase in the number of tests on the speed of Internet access services performed via NET.mede (through a browser), both in residential fixed and mobile accesses.

In the week 20 to 26 April 2020, residential fixed accesses recorded a daily average of 4,813 tests, the highest weekly test volume since the beginning of the pandemic. The time of day when most tests took place was between 2 pm and 7 pm, decreasing after that time.

In terms of mobile accesses, 1,395 tests were carried out, less frequently at weekends. In terms of daily distribution, the testing peak for mobile accesses occurred between 6 pm and 8 pm, with a sharp rise in tests being noted at 3 pm.

In the period under consideration, Lisbon, Porto and Oeiras were the municipalities with the highest number of tests, both in terms of residential fixed and mobile accesses.
