ANACOM approves increase in Internet access speed in 480 parishes

ANACOM approved, on 21 November 2019, the final decision relative to the review of reference speeds associated with coverage obligations in the 800 MHz frequency band.

To this end, MEO - Serviços de Comunicações e Multimédia (MEO), NOS Comunicações (NOS) and Vodafone Portugal - Comunicações Pessoais (Vodafone) have been required to make available, in the 160 parishes in which each operator has mobile broadband coverage obligations (out of a total of 480 parishes), the following Internet access speeds:

  • 43.2 Mbps (MEO)
  • 21 Mbps (NOS)
  • 43.2 Mbps (Vodafone)

By determination of this Authority, NOS and Vodafone have a period of 9 months to ensure compliance with the coverage obligations in accordance with the revised reference speeds, and a period of 6 months for the 50% of parishes covered by these obligations, whereby, until the expiry of these time limits, the reference speeds established in ANACOM’s decision of 3 March 2016 shall remain in force. ANACOM’s decision of 3 March 2016https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1381268 shall remain in force. MEO, since it maintains the reference speed that was already in force, does not have to make any changes.

The fixed coverage obligations have become an integral part of the titles issued to each provider.

Within the context of this decision, ANACOM discloses the verification report on the obligations associated with the 800 MHz band, which presents the results of the coverage studies for the 480 parishes with none or few mobile broadband (MBB).

On this date and at the same time, ANACOM also approved the report on the procedures (prior hearing and public consultation) applied to the draft decisionhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1476276, approved on 26 June 2019.
