ANACOM approves 10% drop in maximum price of circuits linking mainland and autonomous regions

ANACOM approved a decrease in the maximum prices of circuits between the Continent and the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira (CAM circuits) of 10% and of circuits between the various islands of the Azores (inter-island circuits) of 4%. The draft decision now approved by this Authority will be subject to prior hearing and public consultation for 20 working days.

This reduction relates to the prices of the circuits made available by MEO to other operators and providers of electronic communications services under the Ethernet Circuits Reference Offer (ECRO).

This decision results in the need to verify the fulfilment of the obligation (to which MEO is subject) of cost orientation of prices in order to bolster the improvement of competitive conditions in the market, to the benefit of operators and service providers other than MEO, who need to rent these links in order to develop their businesses. In fact, with this drop in wholesale prices, conditions are provided for other operators to provide services in the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, so that there is better coverage of the various islands, and it is expected that the new conditions may lead to more and better retail offers at more competitive prices for the benefit of consumers.

Regarding the prices of traditional circuits, ANACOM decided in the same draft decision to maintain the prices currently in force.

The new prices will take effect on the date of approval of the draft decision.

Comments will be received until 20 November 2019 and should preferably be sent by email to spd-cam@anacom.pt, in writing and in Portuguese.

Once the consultation process has been completed, the contributions received will be publicly disclosed and interested parties should also submit a version with confidential information redacted for publication on this site.
