Internet - optical fibre accesses grows 20.9% in one year

Optical fibre (FTTH) was the main form of fixed broadband Internet access (48.2% of accesses) at the end of the first half of 2019 (1H19), amounting to 1.9 million accesses. FTTH was the form of access that most contributed to the growth in the number of accesses in the last twelve months, with an increase of 20.9% (+322 thousand accesses).

Cable and ADSL accounted for 30.6% and 14% of fixed broadband Internet accesses, respectively. The weight of LTE at a fixed location was 7.2% of total accesses. In the first half of the year, the downward trend in the number of accesses via ADSL intensified, decreasing by 19.5% compared to the first half of 2018.

Compared to the first half of the previous year, the total number of fixed broadband accesses grew by 5.4% (+198 thousand accesses), reaching 3.9 million.

Statistical data for 1H19 also indicate that the penetration rate of fixed broadband residential customers was 78.6 per 100 classic households, 3.9% up on the same period of the previous year.

As for total traffic, fixed broadband Internet increased by 23% in 1H19 compared to the same period of the previous year, with average monthly traffic per access reaching 119.7 gigabytes (GB).

In terms of the structure of fixed broadband Internet access service markets, four entities with significant subscriber shares are operating: MEO (40.2%), the NOS Group (36%), Vodafone (19.7%) and the NOWO/Onitelecom Group (3.8%).

MEO was also the leading provider of optical fibre (FTTH) and ADSL-based Internet, having reached 55.4% and 89.9%, respectively, at the end of the half year. NOS is the leading provider of Internet access supported by cable TV networks (87.7%) and fixed location mobile networks (64.2%).
