International deliveries represent 57.1% of parcel service turnover


In 2018, of the total number of parcels processed through the postal networks of the main parcel service providers in Portugal, 68% were domestic parcels, around 20.6% originated in other countries (international parcels received) and 11.5% were international outgoing parcels. In total, 32% of parcels are international.

Furthermore, 42.9% of the parcel services turnover of the main providers in Portugal was generated by domestic parcels, 21.9% came from international parcels received and 35.2% from international outgoing parcels, i.e. international orders accounted for 57.1% of the turnover of this service.

About 94% of international parcels received in Portugal and 88% of international outgoing parcels originated in or were destined for countries of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA was the origin or destination of 91.8% of international parcels and 29.4% of total traffic.

As regards the turnover of this service, 83.9% of incoming international traffic (international parcels received), and 73.7% of outgoing international traffic came from parcels received from or sent to EEA countries. In total, the EEA represents 77.6% of the turnover of international parcels and 44.3% of total turnover for this service.

The average turnover per object was 5.44 euros. Unit revenue from domestic parcels was the lowest (3.43 euros), followed by unit revenue from international parcels received (5.78 euros) and international outgoing parcels (16.72 euros). Unit revenue from extra-EEA traffic was 3 and 2.6 times higher than traffic coming from or destined for the EEA, respectively. Unit revenue from international parcels received from the EEA was about 1.5 times higher than unit revenue from domestic parcels.

Regarding human resources associated with the provision of parcel delivery services, among workers (not exclusively) associated with this, the number of full-time workers accounted for 89.2% of the total, while part-time and temporary workers accounted for 2.5% and 8.3%, respectively.

In 2018, 9 parcel delivery service providers subcontracted 516 companies. Most subcontracted companies were involved in parcel distribution (82.6%) and parcel transport (23.3%).
