ANACOM defines a roadmap for the release and allocation of the 700 MHz band

ANACOM has issued the national roadmap for the release of the 700 MHz band, which is necessary for 5th generation mobile development within the framework of international agreements and the determinations of the European Parliament and of the Council. Release of the band, which is to commence in the last quarter of 2019 and will be completed by 30 June 2020, requires the migration of digital terrestrial television (DTT) to a new frequency band.

The national roadmap proposed by ANACOM and approved by the Secretary of State for Infrastructure provides for the adoption of the simplest migration scenario, through the maintenance of current technology and without the need for any period of simultaneous transmission. This scenario only entails the tuning of equipment to the new frequency, i.e. there will be no need to acquire any new equipment or repoint antennas. Despite the simplicity of the process, ANACOM will offer support to users and is preparing a plan for this purpose.

The adoption of this migration scenario, which was indicated in especially conducted studies and which corresponds to the convergent position that emerged from the Workshop on the future of DTT organised by ANACOMhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1454417, does not undermine or preclude any solution that may then be adopted for the future expansion of the DTT offer in Portugal.

In this scenario, capacity remains available on the network to set up two new open signal channels, in standard definition, as today.

It is recalled that in view of the allocation of this band to mobile communications, ANACOM has launched a public consultation (ANACOM makes way for 5th Mobile Generationhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1431845) to sound out the market and assess the interest of operators in this and other bands that technologically enable the development of the various services which might be provided with this new mobile generation, including Machine-to-Machine communications (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT).
