Quintuple-play bundles become a favourite among users in 2016


There were 3.51 million subscribers to bundled offers in Portugal as at the end of 2016 - an increase of 266 thousand subscribers versus 2015 (+8.2%). This trend results mainly from an increase reported in the number of subscribers to quintuple-play bundles - an increase of 177 thousand subscribers over the past 12 months - and in the number of subscribers to triple play bundles with the fixed telephone service, fixed broadband and pay-TV - an increase of 116 thousand subscribers (+8.9%) compared to 2015.

By the end of 2016, quintuple-play (fixed broadband service, fixed voice, pay-TV, mobile telephone and mobile broadband) became the bundle with most use, with 1.44 million subscribers (41% of total subscribers), followed by triple-play (fixed telephone service, fixed broadband and pay-TV) with 1.42 million subscribers (40.4% of total subscribers) and double-play (fixed service and pay-TV) with 273 thousand subscribers (7.8% of total subscribers).

It is estimated that about 86.1% of private households had a multiple-play bundle as at the end of 2016 (+6.5 percentage points versus 2015).

Meanwhile, revenues from bundled services totalled 1.68 billion euros in 2016 (11.5% more than in 2015). Revenues from quintuple-play bundles represented 55% of total revenues.

Average monthly revenue per subscriber was 41.48 euros in 2016, an increase of 2.2% compared to 2015.

In terms of number of subscribers, MEO was the provider reporting the largest share of customers (39.7%), followed by Grupo NOS (39.3%), Vodafone (15.9%) and Group Apax (5%). Vodafone was the provider that saw the largest increase in its share of subscribers during 2016 (+2.1 percentage points), gaining the largest number of subscribers in net terms.

In terms of revenue, MEO reported a share of 43.1%, followed by Grupo NOS (39.1%), Vodafone (13.5%) and Group Apax (4.2%).

Grupo NOS leads in terms of triple and quadruple-play bundles, while MEO leads in terms of double-play and quintuple-play bundles (subscribers and revenues).
