World Post Day 2016

World Post Day (WPD) is celebrated on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874, and its aim is to raise the awareness of the population and businesses about the day-to-day role of the postal sector and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

In Portugal, the day will be marked with a commemorative ceremony on 10 October, organised by the Portuguese Communications Foundation (FPC) on its premises. Those attending the event include Fátima Barros, Chairman of the Board of Directors (BD) of ANACOM and the FPC General Council, Francisco de Lacerda, Chairman of the BD and CEO of CTT - Correios de Portugal, and Luis M. Andrade, Chairman of the BD of FPC.

At this session the prizes for the “Best letter 2016” on the theme “Imagine you are 45 years old and are writing a letter to yourself” will be awarded to Pedro Vieira, from Vila Nova de Gaia, in the 9-11 years-old age group, and Maria Machado, from Porto, in the 12-15 years-old age group.

The ceremony includes the launch of the commemorative stamp issue “500 years of Mail", as well as the opening of the exhibition "In Print" from the collection of the iconographic FCP archive and “From High-Couriers to the Republic” from the permanent exhibition.
