Study on substitutability between fixed broadband and mobile broadband

The ''Study on substitutability between fixed broadband and mobile broadband'' is available for consultation1. The study was conducted by IMR - Instituto de Marketing Research (Institute of Marketing Research).

The broadband Internet access market has undergone a series of important changes that need monitoring, especially as growing demand for broadband Internet access may generate changes in the characteristics of competition.

This study evaluates the relationship of substitutability between fixed broadband and mobile broadband, focusing on providers of the broadband Internet service operating in Portugal, as well as on the country's resident end-users.

According to the information analysed, the existence of multiple technologies and Internet access platforms tends to generate three structural benefits: increased range of end-user choice, a contribution to innovation in services and downward pressure on prices.

The analysis also concludes that in Portuguese homes, the forms of fixed and mobile broadband access are predominantly used in a complementary manner and, that for users, the preferred areas of potential regulatory focus coincide with areas of lower satisfaction: especially contract lock-in periods and pricing,

The detailed findings of this study will be presented at a workshop hosted by ANACOM, the date of which will be announced in due course.
