Land Mobile Service reaches 5.8 million clients

At the end of September, Portugal had 5.8 million Land Mobile Service clients, according to data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP). This is equivalent to 11% growth between the second and third quarters of the year and the subscription of 575,000 new clients. 1.5 million new clients have subscribed to the service over the last 12 months.

Land mobile service traffic, measured by the number of calls made, has also risen by the same proportion - 11%. In the third quarter of the year around 1,500,000,000 calls were made. The average subscriber made 3 calls per day, 79% of which were originated in the mobile network.

16% growth in conversation time was recorded in the third quarter, compared to the second quarter, with a total of 2,200,000,000 conversation minutes. 77% of these conversation minutes were originated in a mobile network. The average duration of calls was around 91.5 seconds, 4.6% higher than the second quarter.

The penetration rate of the Land Mobile Service in Portugal continues to lie above the European average. In September, 57.7% of the population already subscribed to the service. Spain and the United Kingdom have also now risen to this level, having had lower levels in June 30, 2000.

Paging/Trunking In September, the Paging Service had 35,700 subscribers, a 15% decrease. On the same date, the Trunking Service had 12,200 subscribers, 8% lower than the previous quarter.
