Data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) reveals that by the end of June, 2000, there were 5,19 million Land Mobile Service subscribers.
This corresponds to 5,3% growth on the previous quarter, and an absolute increase of 262 500 new subscribers. There was a 9% growth in conversation time compared to the first quarter 2000, corresponding to a total of 1,8 billion conversation minutes. Average call duration for the second quarter 2000 was 87,5 seconds and 75% of all conversation time was originated in mobile networks.
The number of calls made rose by 7% with a total of 1,3 billion calls, equivalent to an average of 3 calls per day per subscriber. 78% of all calls made were originated in mobile networks.
In terms of penetration rate, Portugal's rate of 51.9% on June 30 2000, continues slightly above the EU average of 49,6%.
